EDUCAUSE is a leading organization focusing on the growth and enhancement of higher education through the use of information technology.  The EDUCAUSE website states that their purpose is to shape technology decisions within every level of higher education by providing the educational community with the knowledge, resources, and networking opportunities to do so (EDUCAUSE, 2022).  What makes EDUCAUSE so unique is that all views and experiences are valued and that it seeks the “transformative power of uncommon thinking for the common good” (EDUCAUSE, 2022).

One of the most exciting trends discussed in the 2022 EDUCAUSE Horizon Report – Teaching and Learning Edition is the topic of “AI for Learning Analytics” (Pelletier et al., 2022).  Big data has allowed a more remarkable emergence of AI-enabled technologies throughout higher education (Pelletier et al., 2022).  As these datasets continue to grow and become more robust, AI learning technologies will advance to “deep learning” applications (Pelletier et al., 2022).  These deep learning applications will be able to “learn” and continually evolve to adapt to a student’s learning progression (Pelletier et al., 2022).

The EDUCAUSE report provides two extraordinary examples of how these technologies are being applied in practice.  These include the use of simulated learning environments at Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania and predictive analytics dashboards at the University of Washington.   Both models utilize robust student experience datasets and virtual environments to generate a better learning environment for their students.

The Radiography department at Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania has been nationally recognized for its use of virtual reality in the classroom (Devlin, 2/1/2022).  Students utilize VR equipment within a virtual medical appointment that allows students and instructors to explore new teaching methodologies through technology (Devlin, 2/1/2022; Pelletier et al., 2022).  This project results from a collaboration between the college and Siemen’s Corporation (Pelletier et al., 2022).

Student support staff at the University of Washington have utilized their learning management system (LMS) called Canvas to identify struggling students (Lyle et al., 2020; Pelletier et al., 2022).  By identifying three key variables, the Undergraduate Academic Affairs (UAA) and Student Life teams can be mobilized for student interventions that can result in better student outcomes (Lyle et al., 2020; Pelletier et al., 2022).  The use of big data and predictive analytics allow better caseload management and more efficient use of time for members of these university support functions (EDUCAUSE, 2022; Lyle et al., 2020).
